Rather than using just an alphabet wall or a letter flashcard, these cards were designed to focus on the phoneme or sound. There are 44 phonemes in the English language, with even more sound-spelling patterns that represent each phoneme. By using these sound cards or phoneme flashcards, you are helping your student with learning the phonemes to help them decode and spell words phonetically.Β
Why Use a Sound Wall?
Based on the Science of Reading research, sound walls have many more benefits than a word wall in a structured literacy classroom. Students can use sound walls to help identify the sound or spelling pattern when decoding or spelling. Before teaching all the patterns, I recommend using a sticky note to cover up the bottom. Iβve also included an additional version with a blank space at the bottom so you can add each pattern and a word as you learn them.Β
All of the cards also include a mouth shape, so students can see how their mouth should look when pronouncing each sound correctly. There are so many ways you can use these cards to support your students in the classroom!
NOTE: The flashcards are also included in the Daily Phonemic Awareness Warm-Ups for both Kindergarten and First Grade.Β
