Looking for a Thanksgiving CVC word activity that’s more than just cute? This free Thanksgiving CVC word activity has your kindergarten students blending real and nonsense words with the sweetest little turkeys, and it’s one of the simplest ways to build reading fluency before break.
It’s low-prep, too. Just print, cut, and go, so you can add it to your plans without adding another thing to your to-do list because the weeks before Thanksgiving are busy enough already!

Why Nonsense Words Help Build Reading Fluency
It might seem a little silly to have kids read words that aren’t real. But nonsense words are one of the best tools we have for building strong, fluent readers.

Here’s why:
- They stop the guessing. When a student sees ham and says “hat,” they’re using the first letters to guess. Nonsense words take guessing off the table, because there’s no familiar word to fall back on.
- They show you who’s really decoding. If a student can blend pib or zot, you know they’re using letter-sound knowledge, not memory.
- They build automaticity. The more often students blend sounds quickly and accurately, the more automatic decoding becomes. That frees up their brainpower for reading with fluency and understanding what they read.
- They build confidence. Once kids realize they can read any CVC word, even a made-up one, they approach new words without fear.

How to Use This Thanksgiving CVC Word Activity
This Thanksgiving CVC word sort includes:
- 24 turkey word cards: 12 real CVC words and 12 nonsense CVC words covering all five short vowels
- Real and Nonsense header cards for sorting
- Color and black-and-white versions so you can print whichever works best for your classroom

Here’s how it works:
- Set out the Real and Nonsense header cards.
- Students pick a turkey card and tap out each sound. For jam, they say /j/ /a/ /m/.
- They blend the sounds together to read the whole word.
- They decide if it’s a real word or a nonsense word and place it under the right header.
Teacher tip: If a student isn’t sure whether a word is real, have them try to use it in a sentence. If they can (“I put jam on my toast”), it’s real! If not, it’s a nonsense word.

Easy Ways to Fit It Into Your November Plans

One of my favorite things about word sorts is how easily they fit into what you’re already doing. You don’t need a brand-new lesson just because it’s Thanksgiving!
- Small groups: Listen as each student reads the cards. You’ll quickly see who’s blending every sound and who’s guessing.
- Literacy centers: Add the cards and headers to a word work center for independent practice.
- Partner game: Partners take turns drawing a card, reading it aloud, and deciding together where it goes.
- Fluency warm-up: Once students are confident, time how quickly they can read and sort all 24 cards. Then challenge them to beat their time!
- Quick check before break: It’s an easy, low-pressure way to see how your students’ CVC decoding is coming along.
Teacher tip: Print the black-and-white version on colored cardstock and laminate for a sort you can use year after year!
