1. Start with a Yearlong Plan for Your First Year Teaching Kindergarten

You don’t need every single lesson prepped before school starts, but having a basic roadmap will save you so much time and mental energy later. Focus on:
- Your phonics and math scope and sequence
- Monthly themes or units
- How you'll organize your weekly planning
Want help creating your yearlong plan? I walk you through it inside the free 5-day email series.
2. Focus on Routines, Not Just Decor

It’s tempting to go all-in on your classroom theme (and those rainbow carts, I know!), but strong routines will have a much bigger impact on your success. Spend your first weeks teaching:
- How to line up
- What to do during centers
- How to ask for help
- Transitions and clean-up
And here’s what real teachers had to say:
“Expectations first, exploration second, academics third.”
“This isn't order of importance! It’s the order in which you start the year. Focus on expectations first (explain, model, practice); then you can focus on exploration (what tools do we have, how do we use them, what do we use them for); then you can focus on academics (student goals, tracking data, adaptations, etc.).” – Shelby
“Think through every routine. Write it all down so you know how to anticipate all their questions the first week—because they WILL have them. Practice every routine for the first few weeks and your year will go much more smoothly!” – Kerry
“Model EVERYTHING—I mean EVERYTHING!!” – Hunny
3. Plan Your First Day of Kindergarten Step-by-Step

Spoiler: you won’t get through half of what you planned on day one—and that’s okay! Stick to simple, quick activities that help students feel safe, loved, and successful throughout your first year teaching Kindergarten.
Think:
1. A short read aloud (I love these Back to School books here)
2. A classroom tour
3. A simple name activity
4. A few movement breaks

4. Prep for “Meet the Teacher” Night

Meet the Teacher may seem overwhelming, especially for your first year teaching Kindergarten. This is your first impression—and you want to feel ready, not frazzled!
Prepping ahead of time really helps everything run smoothly. Make sure you have:
- A simple welcome station
- Sign-in sheet and forms
- A short slideshow or handout
- A warm, friendly smile 😊
I share my best prep tips and a checklist in the series to take the stress out of this event.
5. Set Up Kindergarten Centers the Smart Way

Centers can feel chaotic if you don’t have clear expectations. Before launching them, make sure students understand the routines and what each station looks like. You don’t need 10 fancy bins—just a few purposeful, hands-on activities that you rotate weekly.
Inside the email series, I’ll help you:
1. Set up your center space
2. Plan your first rotations
3. Keep things organized
