You're nearing the end of the year, hooray! Now that your students are writing independently, this is the perfect time to add more creative writing activities to your lesson plans. I love using the end of the year and summertime as a focus for our writing time, it gets your students so excited! Here are 3 fun end-of-year writing prompt activities for Kindergarten!
Our Future's So Bright Sunglasses Writing and Craft
One of the themes I like to do at the end of the year is “What do you want to be when you grow up?” It is so sweet hearing about your students' hopes and dreams for the future and seeing what they want to be when they grow up. Sometimes, it is very specific too! One year I had a girl who wanted to be a hairdresser for famous people, and another year I had a boy who wanted to operate an excavator.
To complete this activity, I found a pair of HUGE sunglasses from the Dollar Store. I took a picture of each student in the sunglasses and printed them. Then, they wrote about what they wanted to be when they grew up and glued both pieces to the inside of the sunglasses. Flip the top piece up and look inside to see each student and their goals for the future.
You can also use this resource to create a bulletin board, as shown above. Another option is to use your own writing prompt, for example, “What are you most excited about this summer?”. You can find this end-of-year writing prompt activity and craft here.
ABC Countdown to Summer Writing Activity
Are you doing an ABC Countdown to Summer in your classroom? A fun way to add a writing element to this is to add daily writing prompts about each letter and the activity for the day! You can have the students draw a picture and write a sentence or two to create a writing journal for the end of the year. It is the simplest writing activity for the last 26 days of school!
You can find the ABC Countdown to Summer Daily Writing Prompts here.
Summer Fun Picture Prompts
Looking for an end-of-year creating writing activity to use during your literacy center rotations? Use these summer-themed picture prompts to help students write about a summer topic. They can pick a summer picture, write a sentence about that topic, then draw a picture to match. These would look so cute up on a “Summer Fun” bulletin board. Get the Picture Prompts here.
