As students are learning how to read, write and spell, word work activities are a great way to practice their phonics skills! Word work gives students an opportunity to play with words, and develop into better readers and spellers. During my ELA center rotations, one of my go-to centers was a Word Work center. When looking for activities for my word work center, I typically stuck with two criteria- simple and no-prep, meaning all I had to do was print and it was ready for centers. Here are 5 no prep word work ideas you can use for Kindergarten!
Everyone LOVES play dough, am I right?!? For this word work activity, simply print the page, and stick it in a page protector or dry-erase pocket, so you can reuse it for each center group. Students will roll the letters into “snakes” and then pinch to form each letter, spelling the word or phonics pattern.

Stamps are one of my favorite tools to use to teach spelling words. Students will look at the picture, then use stamps to spell the word out.

We can tune up our fine motor skills with this word work activity! Students will cut out the letters at the bottom, then glue them in place to spell each word.

I am pretty sure I have mentioned this activity a bunch of times, but it is definitely a go-to word work activity of mine! You can just use a plain whiteboard and some picture cards, or spice it up and throw in magnetic letters too. I use the pictures I already have from my phonics picture sorts and my students will practice spelling with the magnetic letters, then writing the word on the dry-erase board.
