Tips for Planning Your Classroom Elf on the Shelf

Having a classroom Elf is one more thing to prep, but planning ahead makes all the difference. I like to map out my Elf ideas on a calendar so I’m not stuck thinking, “What should the Elf be doing today?” right as my students walk through the door.

Most of the ideas below use things you already have in your classroom, like manipulatives, magnetic letters, paper, or basic holiday decor, so keeping it simple is totally doable.

15 Easy Elf on the Shelf Classroom Ideas

1. Camouflage the Elf

Stick a giant bow on your Elf and hide them in the Christmas tree. My class didn’t find ours for over an hour!

2. Christmas light decor

Have your Elf attempt to hang up twinkle lights… and get hilariously tangled in the process.

3. Elf in the candy

Let your Elf “sneak” chocolate from your candy stash. A little smear on the cheeks makes it extra funny.

4. Special Treat Delivery

Reward an awesome day with a small surprise from the Elf, such as pencils, mini erasers, stickers, or reward coupons.

5. A Special Note from the Elf

The Elf leaves a note using magnetic letters. This is another way to announce a fun reward, or you can write a note from the Elf.

6. Repelling Elf

Tape your Elf to a paper chain or ribbon and have them “repel” from the ceiling. The kids think this is epic.

7. Do Not Touch!

If someone touches the Elf, stage a dramatic “injury” with Band-Aids and a DO NOT DISTURB sign.

8. Marshmallow Snow Angel

Spread out mini marshmallows and position your Elf making snow angels.

9. Hot Chocolate Delivery

Save this for a special day! Have your Elf bring hot cocoa supplies for a Polar Express celebration.

10. Paper Snowflake Hideout

Make a giant paper snowflake and hide the Elf behind it. Or let the Elf “decorate” the classroom with snowflakes overnight.

11. STEM and Manipulative Bin Fun

Place your Elf inside your STEM bins or math manipulative bins, blocks, pattern tiles, anything goes!

12. New Book Surprise

Your Elf brings a “new” read-aloud (Scholastic points are your best friend here!). It’s a great way to build excitement around books. (Idea from Raining Hot Coupons)

13. Bow Climbing Elf

Stick gift bows up a wall or window and position your Elf “climbing” them. Easy, visual, and adorable. (Idea uploaded on Pinterest here)

14. Elf on the Shelf with Play-Doh

The Elf makes Christmas decorations using Play-Doh. This is another last-minute, easy idea for the Elf. (Idea uploaded on Pinterest here)

15. Elf on the Shelf classroom scavenger hunt

Hide candy canes around the room and let students search. You can even add letters to each one and have students unscramble a message. (Idea from Skinny Mom)
